Need Migraine Relief? Head to the Kitchen

Sometimes taking medications to deal with migraines is not exactly what we want to do to manage the pain. Of course, before medicines became commonplace, there were other ways of healing that were found all around us.

Many are afraid that natural remedies are unsafe. Yet today’s modern medicinal practices were developed over time by observing ancient methods of using herbs, plants, and oils to heal everything from morning sickness to infections. Some of those are as simple as pulling out the produce drawer in your refrigerator.  (Remember to talk with your doctor before doing anything other than eating foods you are safe with!)

Groceries as Migraine Treatment

  • Cabbage leaves – This is an old wives tale that may just be worth a try.  Why?  Cabbage is a great food for anti-inflammation.  When you place a compress of cabbage on your forehead it helps relieve the pain of a migraine.  Crush fresh leaves and place them in a cheese cloth. Hold the compress to your forehead until the headache subsides. Replace the leaves when they dry out.
  • Grapes – Grape juice seems to help bring relieve to migraine sufferers, researchers believe it may be tied to the vitamin B2. Before you run out and grab a bottle of grape juice, this natural remedy works best with fresh ripe grapes. Throw them in a food processor or blender and drink the mixture without adding anything to it.  Another caution is that for some people grapes may be a trigger; make sure that grapes are not on your trigger list before you start using this as treatment.
  • Vegetable juice cocktails – Don’t reach for the V8. Juicing your own vegetables in their natural form can help alleviate your migraine pain. Combine beet juice, cucumber juice, and carrot juice for one migraine cocktail. Or, you may like to try a mixture of spinach juice and carrot juice.  Ultimately this works as the healthier your diet the better stabilized your body is, thus helping your migraines be more manageable.
  • Lemons – These little powerhouse fruits do everything from relieving a sore throat to disinfecting. But, did you know that they were also good for headache relief? Peel the lemon and grind the peeling into a paste. Apply the paste to your forehead and relax. Watch for any redness after a minute and remove if your skin is sensitive.  They are also great in hot water to help your liver function better.  Better liver function helps maintain migraines.
  • Wheat Germ – This nutrient rich food is popular with many people for a variety of reasons. But, the use of wheat germ to relieve migraines comes from the fact that it is a valuable source of niacin, or B3, which is believed to relieve migraine headaches. You can sprinkle wheat germ on a salad or cereal and just eat it.
  • Peppermint oil – Used either in herbal tea or as a massage oil, peppermint oil offers relief for many. Drop the oil in a hot cup of herbal tea or rub the oil into your temples. It is believed that the healing properties of peppermint oil can be compared to taking acetaminophen, without the stomach upset or other side effects. As a matter of fact, peppermint is known to relieve nausea, a common complaint of migraine sufferers.
  • Mint tea – Just brewing a hot cup of mint tea can help in two ways. Breathing in the mint aroma can sooth and relax, which is important to mitigating the pain involved in a migraine. Many migraine sufferers report a physical relaxing experienced in just a few minutes after inhaling the mint aromas. Then, drinking the mint tea does even more to give relief. You can brew mint tea several ways; buy mint tea or crush mint leaves and steep in hot water.

Instead of reaching inside the medicine cabinet, take a look around your refrigerator and pantry. There are many natural remedies to try that have very few if any side effects. Of course, remember you’ll still want to be on the safe side and consult your doctor before ingesting any new remedies for your migraine headaches.
